What is Bleed and why do I need it

"Bleed" is probably our most commonly asked question.

Luckily the answer is fairly simple.

If you want the print colour to reach the edge of your page then you need to supply 3mm of the colour (or picture) past the trim down size.

So, if your document was 90mm x 55mm you would need to supply a document that is 96mm x 55mm.

Additional points:

  1. Bleed is the area that gets trimmed off
  2. Some programs (like Adobe InDesign) allow you to add bleed to the PDF when you are exporting the file
  3. Some programs you will need to create the document size which includes the bleed
  4. "Trim Down" refers to the size your document will be trimmed to
  5. You should always keep text 3mm in from the trim size

This is what your PDF file should look like with colour going over where the trim marks cut
